About Us

In 2004 Calvary Christian School opened their doors as a k3-6th Grade Christian day school in Highland, IN.  CCS started as an effort to maintain Christian elementary education in the Highland area.  It began as and continues to be a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church.  The school saw steady growth over the next few years under the leadership of Sr. Pastor Dan Obinger and School Admin. Debbie Svoboda.  For the 2005-2006 academic year the school added a class for 7th and 8th grade. In 2006 Richard Blakeley became the 2nd school administrator in the short history of CCS.   It is a passion of Calvary Baptist Church that Biblical education continues, grows and thrives in NW Indiana in the coming years.

Starting in the 2008-2009 academic year CCS will partner with Calumet Baptist School under the name CCS in order to offer a Biblical K3-12th Grade education to children in NW Indiana!

We are excited about God’s future plans for CCS and the great things He will do through the children who have and will attend His ministry!

Calvary Christian SchoolThe History of
Calumet Baptist
School

Calumet Baptist School was established in 1962 as Baptist Christian School, an agency of the Calumet Fellowship of Regular Baptist Churches.  The board members were appointed by the Council of Nine of the CFRBC.  These members were comprised of pastors and laymen.  In 1972, with the move to a permanent facility, we became Calumet Baptist School, a self-governing arm of the CFRBC with a self-appointed board of the supporting CFRBC churches.  Eventually, the by-laws were re-worked giving each supporting church one representative on the council.  Involvement was also allowed by non-CFRBC Baptist churches who were independent and philosophically aligned with us.

CBS was started as an elementary school with grades K-6th at Calvary Baptist Church which was then located at the corner of Cottage Grove and Highway Ave. in Highland.  In the fall of 1969, CBS was moved to Grace Baptist Church in Gary where it was housed until the fall of 1972.  At that time, we purchased a facility at 47th and Whitcomb in Gary.  Grades 9 and 10 were then added to complement the Jr. High classes which were housed at Glen Park Baptist for two years prior to the move.  The 11th and 12th grades were each added in the following years with the first graduating class of 12 in 1975.

Since that first class, we have graduated over 770 students from CBS.  Graduating class sizes have ranged from that first class of 12 to a high of 44 in 1979.  School enrollment has also seen a wide range.   During the late 70’s, we saw our record high of approximately 430 students.  We have  a large geographical student base.  Our students have come from as far as LaPorte, Lowell, Harvey, IL and all points in between.

Due to the fluctuation in enrollment, we have had to become creative in housing.  There were years in which the elementary was moved into Grace Baptist and other years it was moved into Calvary Baptist to help ease the crowding.  Due to a deterioration of the facility at 47th and Whitcomb, in 1991 we found ourselves forced to find a new location for the Jr/Sr high school.  From the fall of 1991 until the spring of 1995, we were housed in a rented church in Hobart.  The Lord allowed us to purchase a facility on Orchard Dr. in Highland in the fall of 1995.  During a need to downsize in 2004, we sold the Orchard Dr. facility and moved the Jr/Sr high school program to Griffith Baptist Church.  This downsizing was done in conjunction with the desire of Calvary Baptist Church to start an elementary school.

CBS has been led by eight individuals.  Our first principal was Mrs. Gilbert.  Following her, we had Mr. Dick Abel, Mr. Bill Francis, Rev. Ron Phillips, Mr. Jim Wendorf, Dr. Richard Stashevsky, and Pastor Dave Myers.  Our current principal is Mrs. Linda Baessler who has been with CBS since the high school program was added.

CBS has been associated with the ACSI and is currently a member of the AACS.  We have been blessed with many of our students receiving awards in our state academic competition.  We have also had five first places in national academic competition.  In the athletic arena, our girls volleyball and boys basketball teams have place in many state and national competitions.
